iPad Uses for Agriculture

The iPad is very quickly becoming an indispensable tool for the farm. The iPad can be used for mapping, GPS, documenting, recording, weather, news, commodity prices, and so on. Of course, when used in combination with the iBackFlip Somersault, the usefulness of the iPad increases two-fold. The iPad and Somersault combination is ideal for use on the farm and even more so with these popular farming and agricultural apps & tools:

The Bad Elf GPS Receiver
This is very quickly becoming a must have device for the IPad to turn it into an accurate GPS device. In agriculture having this in invaluable. Any IPad without 3G will need to use this product to utilize any location based app found in the Apple store. Now lets look at what apps to use to fully utilize the Bad Elf GPS reciever.

This is a web-based application that uses satellite imagery to help growers and Ag suppliers meet their needs. Analyze imagery, create and export zone maps for any place in the world with Internet access with a secure login and password. The Satshot system makes it easy to monitor the growth and changes of a crop throughout the season by increasing the frequency of satellite imaging. Infrared satellite imagery shows the patterns of a field’s growth. Each image looks at the vegetative biomass and reflectiveness of the crop and creates a zone map. This allows you to be site specific with crop inputs.

DTN/The Progressive Farmer: Agriculture News, Markets and Weather
Everyone in the world of farming knows what a DTN is, but it has evolved tremendously since the 80s and 90s. Now the DTN app for iPad all you need is an internet connection and you can get the latest AG news, prices, and local weather. This is a must have for anyone in the Ag industry. http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/dtn-the-progressive-farmer/id404268539?mt=8

Clinometer HD – bubble level and slope finder
This application can be super useful for leveling anything out. Useful in Agriculture and many other applications. The great part is it’s free.

Notes Plus – Handwriting, Note Taking, Shape Drawing, and Sound Recording
Notes Plus is a powerful note-taking tool that supports handwriting, typing and audio recording. It offers close-up writing mode for small text, stroke smoothing, vector shape auto-detection, palm handling, complete folder structure, PDF exporting, emailing, Google Docs uploading, and more. I think this is another great app for agriculture. Jot down notes on the run or voice record your thoughts.
